Every row is a result of our own estimate model at $89 per hour of team time, with design, QA and project management included. They are model results for the features listed, not quotes. Run the same model with your features in the estimate and you get your own range.
Why our numbers are lower than most fintech cost guides
Cost guides published by agencies in 2026 usually quote $50,000 to $150,000 for a fintech MVP and $100,000 to $300,000 for a payments app with banking integration. Those ranges bundle three things: the build, a long compliance program and a large team for 6 to 15 months. Our model prices the build of a focused first version, which is what most founders and finance teams need to fund first. The compliance program and the provider contracts are real costs too. They are just separate lines, paid to different people, and you should see them separately.
What drives fintech app development cost
The model starts from a base package for the project type, then adds hours per feature. These are the features that move a fintech budget most:
- Payments, 32 to 64 hours. Checkout, transfers or payouts through a licensed processor, with webhooks, refunds and failure states.
- Admin panel, 40 to 80 hours. Your operations team needs to see users, freeze accounts, review flagged transactions and answer support tickets.
- Each third-party provider, 16 to 48 hours. A card processor, a bank data aggregator, an identity verification service, a banking partner or an accounting system each needs its own integration and sandbox testing.
- Dashboard and reports, 48 to 104 hours together. Balances, spending, loan status or portfolio views, plus exports your finance or compliance team can use.
- Second native platform, plus 60 percent of the base. Two native apps cost more than one cross-platform app, which adds 25 percent. For most fintech apps a cross-platform build is enough.
- Offline mode, 32 to 64 hours, rarely needed in fintech because money actions should not run without a connection.
The costs that sit outside the build
A realistic fintech budget has four more lines that no development estimate includes:
- Provider fees. Card processing, bank data, identity checks and banking partners charge per transaction, per connected account or per check, and some charge a monthly minimum. Ask each provider for pricing at your expected volume during Discovery.
- Compliance work. Agency guides from 2026 put PCI DSS implementation at $15,000 to $50,000 and a first-year SOC 2 Type II effort at $50,000 to $150,000. You can shrink the PCI part a lot by never storing card numbers, which is how we build payment apps by default.
- Legal. Lending, money transmission and investment features each carry federal and state rules. Fintech counsel decides what your product needs before you spend money on code.
- Maintenance and hosting. After launch, our software maintenance and support plans cost $990, $2,490 or $4,990 a month, and hosting depends on traffic and your cloud provider.
How to keep fintech app development cost down
- Let partners carry the regulated parts. A licensed processor or banking partner holds card data and moves money, so your app stores tokens and references. That is the single biggest saving on compliance.
- Start with one platform or one cross-platform app. A web MVP or a single React Native app validates demand before you pay for two native apps.
- Launch with one payment flow. Transfers, bill pay, payouts and cards can follow once the first flow earns money.
- Buy what is not your edge. If lenders only need statement data in a spreadsheet to underwrite, you can convert PDF bank statements to Excel with an existing tool and spend the build budget on the decision workflow instead.
- Pay by stage. Discovery costs 10 percent of the estimate, at least $1,900, and fixes the price of every later stage. You can stop after any stage and keep the code.
Fintech app development cost for an MVP versus a full product
A fintech MVP in our model, accounts, one payment flow, a dashboard, email and two providers, costs $43,000 to $63,000. A full payments app with an admin panel, push alerts, analytics and mobile apps for both stores costs $77,500 to $100,500 as one cross-platform build. The difference is mostly the admin side and the mobile apps, not the payment logic. That is why many teams launch the web MVP to a pilot group and a partner bank first, then fund the mobile app from the pilot results. Our MVP development cost guide shows what fits in 8, 12 and 16 weeks.
How much does it cost to build a fintech app?
A fintech app costs $43,000 to $116,500 to build in our model, depending on the app type and platforms. A web MVP with one payment flow costs $43,000 to $63,000, a cross-platform payments app $77,500 to $100,500, and two native apps $94,000 to $116,500. Provider fees, compliance audits and maintenance are budgeted separately.
How long does it take to build a fintech app?
Most fintech apps take 6 to 13 weeks of build in our model after a one week Discovery. An MVP takes 6 to 8 weeks and a payments app 10 to 13 weeks. Partner bank onboarding, processor reviews and app store approval add calendar time outside the build, often several weeks.
Is it cheaper to hire a fintech app development company or build an in-house team?
For a first version, an agency priced by stage is usually cheaper. A median US software developer costs about $15,800 a month once benefits are added (BLS 2024 pay plus 2025 benefit share, see our dedicated developer cost math), and a fintech build needs two or three people plus design and QA for three months. After launch, an in-house team wins once the roadmap runs for years.
